Antiquarium e sepolcreto di via Donota

Where Via Donota, Trieste

Antiquarium consists of an area of archaeological excavations, made between 1980 and 1986 in the area behind the Roman theater, and an exhibition space set up at the tower of the medieval walls. A domus of the first century AD was reused, starting from about half of the II and up to the sixth century, for purposes of pagan funeral rituals. Significant is the presence of a compound, which in a first phase delimited the burial area: the balustrade is made of limestone slabs and remain the foundations of a funerary monument located near the front, in a prominent position at the ancient road that is modeled by the current street Donota. Following the interior space and the surrounding was systematically used for the insertion of graves, in cash and in jars (initially reserved especially for children). Were also found items such as a kind of stone seat, probably linked to the ritual of epulum, a feast consumed at the tomb in honor of the deceased. One room is dedicated to materials found during the excavation of the domus and burial, as well as the dwelling located in the nearby Piazza Barbacan, near the Arch of Riccardo, dating from about the middle of the first century AC.
