Chiesa di Sant'Agostino

Where Via Ruggero di Lauria Ammraglio, 12, Trapani

Built in 1101 as the Chapel of the Knights Templar and dedicated to St. John the Baptist, in 1313 it passed to the Augustinian friars who enlarged it on the lines of the Gothic style. The bombings of 1943 destroyed the apse and part of the nave. Buoyancy original remains the main prospect, with gabled facade, the ample rose window of the fourteenth century and a polygonal apse. On the portal, in a niche, there is a Madonna and Child by Gagini. The rose window, built by local craftsmen with stone from the Pietretagliate, has entwined arches in a move radially, with slender columns that lead the eye to the Lamb, focal point, and the symbols of the three main monotheistic religions.
