Porta Palazzo

Where Corso Regina Margherita, 128, Torino

Porta Palazzo is the generic name of an area north-west of the historic center of Turin, whose centerpiece is the octagonal Republic Square, the largest square of the city and home to the largest outdoor market in Europe. The name derives from the ancient gateway to the north of the city, Palatina Gate (identified with large towers in brick, still visible today). The Square was fully completed only in 1837, when it assumed its current commercial vocation. Since 1996, the Porta Palazzo was the subject of a radical redevelopment, with the modernization of existing facilities, the renovation of the urban and the construction of a new road underpass. Among the buildings that overlook the Square, the Antica Trattoria dell'Orologio, certainly the symbol of the market itself. Made in 1916, it is a typical example of the metal Liberty structure dedicated to the sale of food. Many popular Piedmont songs were devoted to Porta Palazzo.
