It dates back to 1861, when work began by the engineer Alessandro Mazzucchetti. The project combined  functional rigor with the representative and monumental characteristics typical of the buildings overlooking Carlo Felice Square. For the Universal Exhibition of 1911 were carried out major expansion work to make the Station ready to receive the many visitors. In 1940 significant changes were introduced in order to achieve a better arrangement of offices and postal compartmental and was built a large building on Via Nizza. The atrium was built a new reinforced concrete roof and, on the main front, was placed inside a second glass facade. During subsequent interventions they were made the two galleries flanking wings of the two buildings. In 1951 it was made head of the tunnel, 30 meters wide and 150 long, with a supporting structure consisting of 33 trussed lattice profile with a knee placed crosswise.
