The Albula and Bernina railway lines between Thusis and Tirano, on whose route Bernina Express largely passes, have been included in UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008, as technically advanced examples of high mountain landscape management and as the most spectacular narrow-gauge railways in the world. The establishment of Rhaetian Railway is due to the initiative of Willem-Jan Holsboer.
