Necropoli dei Monterozzi (Sito UNESCO)

Where Strada Provinciale Monterozzi - Marina, V. Ripagretta, Tarquinia (Viterbo)

The graves cover the whole Monterozzi hill. We know more than six thousand graves, with most rooms carved into the rock and topped with mounds. The latter, now barely visible on the ground, they gave the hill its popular name. The nucleus of the most prestigious cemetery consists of about two hundred painted tombs, the most important of the Mediterranean. In Tarquinia the phenomenon of painting the tombs of noble families assumed in much wider and continue over time than other Etruscan sites (from the seventh to the second century BC for almost the entire duration of the life of the city). Some of painted tombs can be visited, including Tomb of the Lionesses, Leopards, Hunting and Fishing. The visit of the so-called Necropolis Scataglini, a picturesque corner fully excavated, allows the visitor to understand as it was originally the "city of the dead".
