Chiostro Ex Convento di San Domenico

Where Via Duomo, 33, Taranto

In the heart of the old city of Taranto, the Island in which, in 706 BC, settled the first Spartans, is the former convent of San Domenico Maggiore, built in the fourteenth century AD and now houses the Archaeological Heritage of Puglia. Inside the cloister, restored between the seventeenth and eighteenth century and marked by a series of arches supported by columns with capitals with angular leaves, covers a wide archaeological area, inhabited since prehistoric times. It is thus possible to observe the structures of the foundation of a temple built on the acropolis of the Greek colony of Taranto in the sixth century BC and the remains of the Templar cell building. Two fragments of enrolled architrave, reused in the Gothic facade of the convent, document the Roman site.
