Aquarium, which opened in early 1960, is located on an ancient tunnel dug during the Spanish part of the fortifications of war against the threats of pirates. It has its entrance near Foro Italico and release in legendary source of fresh water Arethusa. Aquarium is divided by sectors: one part is reserved for the marine life of Mediterranean, with local fauna of the coasts and large shells; another part is dedicated to tropical lifestyle, with plants and typical fish of places freshwater lakes as African and Amazonian rivers. Another part deals with tropical marine invertebrates.
