CASE ROMANE DEL CELIO

Where CLIVO DI SCAURO, Roma
With the definition of Celio Roman houses are the remains of a Roman residential complex below the Basilica of Saints John and Paul in Rome, in the Celio.
The tradition identifies these places with the house in which the Saints John and Paul lived and were buried, after having suffered martyrdom under the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363 AD).
The archaeological site was discovered in 1887 by Father Germanus of St. Stanislaus, rector of the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo al Celio still officiated by the Passionist Fathers, reveals a fascinating journey through over 20 levels of underground rooms, some with frescoed paintings dating from the third century AD and the Middle Ages.
The core is made up of one of the houses on two levels, the second century AD, occupied by a thermal suite (balneum) on the lower level and an insula, typical tenement with a porch and taberne street level and housing plans superior, built at the beginning of the third century AD along the Clivus Scaurus.
The different units were joined together during the third century AD by a single owner and transformed into an elegant reception rooms with domus pagan decorated with fine frescoes.
The extraordinary archaeological stratification and the excellent state of preservation of the structures already identifies the outside, because the existing perimeter wall of the early Christian church has incorporated the façade of the insula, which recognize the arched portico along the Clivus Scaurus and the windows of two of the upper floors.
