Aventino is one of the seven hills on which Rome was founded, the further south. In the myths related to the founding of Rome it is linked to the legend of Hercules and Caco and the figure of Remus, who chose it as a place from which to spot the birds in flight in the dispute with his brother Romulus to the choice of the place of foundation. It was traditionally the seat of the plebeians, as opposed to the Palatine Hill, the seat of the aristocracy: for its plebeian character, the Hill was also home of the extreme defense of the Tribune Gaius Gracchus, in 123 BC. During the Imperial Era, the character of the Hill it changed, becoming also home to many aristocratic residences. In Medieval times, there arose the churches of St. Sabina, the Saints Boniface and Alexius, and St. Prisca. On "Small Aventine" stand the churches of St. Saba and St. Balbina. Where now it is the Orange Garden, site the Fortress of the Savelli family. Was called "Aventine", with a reference to Roman history, secession parliamentary by antifascists deputies after the kidnapping of Giacomo Matteotti, killed shortly after denouncing electoral fraud in the Camera.
