Antica Casa di Correzione di Carlo Fontana
Where
Via di San Michele, 25, Roma
The old House of Correction of Carlo Fontana, the first example of juvenile prison, occupies a portion of the Monumental Complex of San Michele a Ripa. In 1701, Pope Clement XI Albani ordered the construction of a house of correction for young people, in order to recover them morally and start them at work. Carlo Fontana, inspired by the typology convent, designed a building of great formal rigor. The House of Correction retained its function until 1972. Nowadays it is an original exhibition space over to the Department.
