Museo della Villa Doria Phampilj

Where via Aurelia Antica, 183, Roma

The museum of Doria Pamphili Villa is one of the largest and most important parks of the city of Rome. Originates from the country estate of a noble Roman family, is now representative office of the Italian Government. Designed between 1644 and 1652 by the sculptor Alessandro Algardi and the painter Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi in the early seventeenth century, is one of the best preserved houses in the city. Currently it's divided into three areas: the Palace with the Gardens (pars urbana), the pine forest (pars fructuaria) and the farm (pars rustica). In 1849 the Villa was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles in defense of the Roman Republic, during which Colonel Masina died and was mortally wounded Goffredo Mameli. In 1856 the Villa was joined to the neighboring Villa Corsini and transformed into a large farm. The Museum of the Villa is the first one dedicated to the presentation of a historic building. The main section is located in the "Old House" and exposes materials in chronological order: in the ground floor it can admire the medieval sculptures and funeral on the first floor, the furniture and a series of marble reliefs; in other environments, busts of famous people, until the nineteenth century, and sculptural furniture in Art Nouveau style.
