Tempio del Divo Claudio

Where Clivo di Scauro, Roma

Divine Claudius's Temple was built on Celio Hill in honor of the Emperor Claudius deified. Construction began in the 54th at the behest of his wife, Agrippina the Younger. The history of the complex is not known. The site was built in the fifth century before the Saints John and Paul's Basilica. The Temple was built on a great rectangular platform, one of the highest of Rome. Oriented toward the Palatine, the Temple had an impressive stairway, and was hexastyle, with a portico of three columns of depth and a cell without columns. The western side was decorated with travertine, on two levels. Some remains of the western side are incorporated in the Bell Tower of the Basilica. The east side is the most monumental and best preserved: the remains of brick, decorated with rectangular and semicircular niches alternately. Currently, it is possible to visit the underground, characterized by tunnels dug into the tufa, wells and small ponds.
