Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo

Where Clivo di Scauro, Roma

Was built from 398 by Senator Bizante, on the site of a building dating from between the first and second centuries, it used first as a domus ecclesia as a Christian community and then became the burial of the martyrs John and Paul. The original Church was damaged by the Visigoths under Alaric during the Sack of Rome (410), then by an earthquake in 442, and was eventually sacked by the Normans in 1084. Pope Pascal II he promoted the restoration work, adding the bell tower and the porch, which replaced the original narthex. The building was continuously altered in the following centuries: the interior, with three naves separated by pillars flanked the ancient columns, it retains little of its original appearance. In the bottom of the right aisle there is access to underground sites, discovered in 1887: 20 paintings environments, from five different buildings dating from between the first and fourth centuries, constituting one of the residence of the best preserved Roman times, and one of the best examples of domus ecclesia with original frescoes depicting scenes of martyrdom.
