Porta San Giovanni

Where Piazzale Appio, 1, Roma

St. Jhon's Gate is one of the doors that open into the Aurelian Walls, and owes its name to its proximity to the St. John Lateran's Basilica. It is structured in one great arc made by Pope Gregory XIII, by Giacomo della Porta. It was inaugurated in 1574. It confirms the use for which it was conceived, more like the entrance to a villa that did not work at defensive: entirely without side towers, bastions and battlements, is provided instead of an indentation and an ornament consisting of a large bearded face on top. On the outside there is the memorial plaque of the construction work. The Gate gave it access to the Via Campana.
