Chiostro del Bramante

Where Via Arco della Pace, Roma

Prominent element of Santa Maria della Pace, was designed by Bramante in 1500-1504, commissioned by Cardinal Oliviero Carafa. It is one of the most important works of Renaissance century, one of the first Roman works by Bramante after his Milan period. The square shape is obtained through the repetition of a module equal to the width of the portico. Central space is surrounded by 16 pillars (perfect number according to Vitruvius) forming a continuous portico of vaults. Elevation consists of two orders, according to the proportionate Vitruvian rule: the first, in Ionic pilasters, supporting an entablature with frieze and round arches; the second, presents a pseudo-Corinthian order with inclusion of free columns. Inside, the lunettes are frescoed with Stories of Virgin's Life, to which are added episodes linked to Church. The cloister is home of temporary art exhibitions.
