Chiesa di Santa Maria di Gesù

Where Via Torrenuova, Ragusa

Convent and Church of St. Mary of Jesus were built by Minor Reformed Friars since 1636. The building, for which construction were used materials from ancient Castle of Ragusa, housed different environments: the cloister, service spaces, warehouses and a large cistern carved into the rock, the refectory, the kitchen, and the monks'cells. Church, which unlike the convent, was severely damaged by the 1693 earthquake, was rebuilt in the eighteenth century with a  "hut" facade bordered by two pilasters and portal punctuated by two semi-columns supporting a pediment, the center of which It is the shield crowned by angels bearing the image of the Madonna and Child. The interior, a single nave, has side chapels articulated by semi-columns in the Corinthian capital, and is rich in stucco, work by Raimondo Viccione from Vizzini. The main chapel is decorated with paintings made in the second half of the eighteenth century by Matteo Battaglia.
