Chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Itria

Where Salita del Commentatore, 28, Ragusa

St. Mary's Church is a church of 1391, by order of Jerusalem of Malta. Built thanks to the Chiaramonte family, was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1693. The facade has two orders, separated by a large cornice: the central portal is decorated with motifs of woven leaves, with a window above it. The interior has three naves divided by ten stone columns with Corinthian capitals in white almond leaves. It has five altars, of which the biggest is surmounted by a forum created by Cultraro in 1743. The statue of the Madonna in the niche is covered by the eighteenth-century painting of the Madonna Odigitria, particularly important because under the feet of Child Jesus opens the view of the port of La Valletta. Beautiful the other four altars, in white stone, with twisted columns adorned with floral motifs. In the chapel, which closes the left aisle there is a picture of St. Julian attributed to Mattia Preti, and a crucifix on the altar of the right aisle by Spanish school.
