Castello di Donnafugata

Where C.da Donnafugata, 69, Ragusa

Donnafugata Castle is about 15 kilometers from Ragusa. This is a palatial aristocratic estate of the late '800, belonging to the Arezzo Spuches family. The building covers an area of about 2500 square meters and has a large neo-Gothic facade, crowned by two lateral towers. The origin of the name "Donnafugata" is brought back to a legendary episode: the flight of the Queen of Navarra, widow of King Martin I of Aragon, imprisoned in the Castle by Count Bernardo Cabrera, but the construction of the Castle is next to the legend. The first unit is due to Chiaramonte (XIV century); later, the former fiefdom Bellio-Cabrera passed to Baron Corrado Arezzo, which was responsible for the present appearance of the building, however restored by the City in 1982 after years of neglect. The interior still contain original period furnishings: every room was tastefully decorated differently and had a different function (Music Room, with beautiful paintings in trompe-l'oeil, Hall of coats of arms, Hall of Mirrors, Pinacoteca, Bishop Apartment). The Castle is surrounded by a large and monumental Park of 8 hectares, which originally had over 1.500 plant species and various "entertainment" for the guests: the circular temple, the Coffee House, artificial caves with fake stalactites, and a particular maze stone, built in the typical dry wall of Ragusa, similar to Hampton Court in Great Britain. The Castle was a movie and television set: there they filmed the movie "The Viceroy", various scenes from the TV series "Inspector Montalbano", and the film "The Tale of Tales", by Matteo Garrone (2015).
