Porta di San Pietro (o Romana)

Where Via Benedetto Bonfigli, 5, Perugia

The St. Peter's Gate (or Roman Gate), is one of the Medieval gates of Perugia, inserted in the walls of the XIII-XIV century. The exterior was made of travertine by Agostino di Duccio and Polidoro di Stefano between 1475 and 1480, according to a Renaissance design. The project also provided for the realization of a "caditoria" door. An inscription remembers a restoration in 1765, curated by Francesco degli Ubaldi. The interior facade has preserved its fourteenth century: the arch is topped with a niche in which there is a painting of 1817 showing the Madonna of the Rosary with Saints Dominic and Francis. The depth of the Gate is such that, at its core, is hosted the thirteenth-century St. James's Chapel (or of Good Counsel), renovated in the sixteenth century.
