The CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) was founded in Geneva in 1954 and is located about 8 km from the city, near Meyrin. It features the largest electron accelerator in the world, an circular underground tunnel 27 Km long, known as "Large Hadron Collider", used for the most important experiments in physics. The World Wide Web (www), internet, was born at CERN in 1989, the brainchild of Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau.
