St. Pierre Cathedral

Where Cour de Saint-Pierre, 2, Palmi (Reggio Calabria)

The Cathedral of St. Peter keeps the Gothic style of the twelfth century, although it has been remodeled several times. Recent excavations have revealed an earlier Christian sanctuary of the fourth century. In 1536, right in the cloister of St. Peter, it was decided the passage from the Catholic cult to the Protestant one, and the Cathedral became the center of the European Calvinism. A guided tour allows you to explore the vast archaeological site in which to visit the remains of several religious temples, the bishop's palace and numerous mosaics. Of note, the nearby Chapel of the Maccabees, the fifteenth century, and the Temple of the Auditoire, the Gothic church where John Calvin preached. Through an underground passage you arrive at the International Museum of the Reformation (located on the ground floor of the Maison Mallet). The tower of the Cathedral is accessible by 145 steps and offers a magnificent view of Lake and city. Church, Museum and Towers form the cultural route known as “Espace Saint-Peter”.
