Chiesa di Santa Maria della Catena

Where Piazzetta delle Dogane, 33, Palermo

St. Mary of the Chain's Church is a Catalan-Gothic style building near the f Cala Port, in Palermo. Built on the site of a small chapel (1490-1520) by the architect Matteo Carnilivari, took its name from a chain on the end that closed the port. Annexed to the Church, from 1602 there is the convent house (now seat of the State Archive). The architecture is characterized by a tight correlation between inside and outside: inside, three naves are separated by squat columns reinforced by rectangular pillars, which support Catalans (lowered) arches interspersed by pointed arches; same setting replicated outside, with pilasters that cover the outer walls and the porch, the Catalan tripartite arches on top of a staircase. The mullioned windows are very ornate and the apse area is characterized by a complex interplay of spaces with an octagonal base. Inside are a Nativity with the Adoration of the Shepherds (canvas of the seventeenth century), a Nativity and Adoration of the Magi (bas-reliefs of the XVI century) attributed to Vincenzo and Antonello Gagini, also authors of the capitals and doorways. The first chapel on the right is dedicated to St. Brigida, and houses a painting of the seventeenth century and eighteenth frescos, by Olivio Sozzi; the second contains the a fresco of the fourteenth century, venerated image of the Virgin of Grace, and four statues of saints attributed to Giacomo Gagini (1540).
