Chiesa di San Paolo

Where Piazza Civita, 3, Olbia (Olbia-Tempio)

The Church is located in the historical center of Olbia, on the ruins of a pagan temple from Roman times, probably dedicated to Hercules. The closeness of the Church to the site of the Castle (current building of the former Financial Police), suggest the palace as chapel of the Gallura's rulers and their place of burial. The Church dates back to the Middle Ages, mentioned in documents of the XV century, but was heavily restored and modified in the mid-eighteenth century, adapting to the Baroque style. In 1939 the original building, rectangular in shape with three chapels on each side, was expanded with Latin cross, dome (later majolica) and transept. The interior was painted in the sixties by Alberto Sanna with scenes of the Resurrection, musical angels in the apse, the Via Crucis in the side walls, the illustration of the Sacraments in the dome. In the basement are two crypts with the remains of members of eighteen local families.
