Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso

Where Via Cirillo, 25, Noto (Siracusa)

The second largest Church of city, it was designed by Rosario Gagliardi in the early decades of the eighteenth century. Unfinished facade stands on a short staircase. The dome was built in 1901. The interior is divided into three aisles, lower altars decorated with marble and covered by domes. The transept houses a large marble work recovered in Old Noto, "White Lady" by Francesco Laurana. In the left aisle there is Landolina Chapel, finely decorated with stucco and frescoes in shades pink and light blue. Chapel holds the glass case with Holy Thorn. In the apse there is a golden cross, followed in 1746 by V. Rotondo, on drawings by Gagliardi, the center of which, in a small glass case, is a wood painting depicting Christ, recovered in Old Noto and attributed to St. Luke.
