Teatro Bellini

Where Via Conte di Ruvo, Napoli

The Bellini Theatre is located in Via Conte di Ruvo. The first Theatre was born in 1864, on commission of Baron Nicholas Lacapra Sabelli and project of Carlo Sorgente, as part of a larger urban redevelopment: it was a small theater with a circular plan and a single tier of boxes. In the second stage, the Theater was expanded to represent the operas. Thus was born a Theater with a horseshoe plant, five tiers of boxes and an order of continues lodges with decorations of Giovanni Ponticelli, Pasquale Di Criscito and Vincenzo Paliotti, inaugurated in 1878 with the staging of "I Puritani", by the same Bellini who the Theater was dedicated. The Theatre lived years of great splendor until the postwar period; the last show was staged in 1962, "Masaniello", with Nino Taranto, to close the year after. In 1986 the Theater was acquired by Tato Russo, who brought it back to a number of successful seasons with the theatrical performance of "The Threepenny Opera" by Bertolt Brecht. In 1990, again by the will of the Master Russo, was born a prestigious Academy of Dramatic Arts.
