Port'Alba

Where Via Port'Alba, 28, Napoli

Port'Alba named from Don Antonio Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba and the Spanish Viceroy who had it built in 1625. The Gate was opened in the old Angevin Walls, in lieu of a tower to facilitate the transition. He was the architect Pompeo Lauria to have a mandate from the Duke. In 1656 the painter Mattia Preti decorated the Gate with some frescoes depicting the Virgin with St. Gennaro and St. Gaetano. After passing the old Gate, the current street is equivalent to the beginning of decumanus and joins Dante Square to Bellini Square.
