Historic Center of Naples, with its 27 centuries of history, appears to be the largest in Europe, extending over an area of about 17 square kilometers. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995, it presents an important uniqueness: total conservation and use of ancient Greek road route. Historic Center of Naples contains countless cultural and artistic resources: obelisks, monasteries, cloisters, museums, catacombs, archaeological excavations outdoors and underground with Roman and Greek remains, statues and bas-reliefs, monumental friezes, ancient historic buildings and much more. Only the center, which includes the neighborhoods corresponding to Decumani area of Naples (San Giuseppe, Porto, Pendino, Mercato, San Lorenzo and Vicarìa), sees the existence of more than 200 historical churches, to which the works of art of some of the most famous exponents of Italian art (Giotto, Caravaggio, Donatello, Sanmartino, Vanvitelli, Reni, Martini, Preti and many others).
