Galleria dell'Accademia di Belle Arti

Where VIA COSTANTINOPOLI, 107/A, Napoli

The Gallery of Fine Arts was founded in 1864, at the building that houses the Academy. The collection covers different historical periods, although outweigh the works performed by the students during the nineteenth century. Its opening took place in 1916, but for structural reasons remained closed to the public until 1929. The earthquake of 1930 and the events related to the Second World War will lead to more years of closure, until the final reopening of 2005. The most antique collection, the Historical Gallery, consists of a core of twenty-eight paintings of the Neapolitan school dating from the sixteenth until the middle of the eighteenth century; as well as drawings, paintings and sculptures in marble, bronze and pottery (XVI-XIX century). An important number of pieces was donated by Palizzi (1896) and includes works by foreign artists such as Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps and Henri Rousseau. Besides the Historical Gallery, the museum includes a Gallery of Plaster casts, which displays hundreds of pieces, some rare and of great value; the Regional Gallery of Modern Art, which consists of nearly 800 works (by Antonio Mancini, Carlo Brancaccio, Vincenzo Ciardo, Saverio Gatto, Emilio Notte) and a video section. The collection of drawings and watercolors has 206 pieces, made by teachers and students of the Academy, as well as some works by Giandomenico Tiepolo.
