Palazzo Doria d'Angri

Where Piazza Sette Settembre, Napoli

It was erected and commissioned by Marcantonio Doria on former sixteenth century houses. After the death of Vanvitelli, the projects went to Ferdinando Fuga, Mario Gioffredo and Carlo Vanvitelli. In 1860 the Palace became famous because from its balcony Giuseppe Garibaldi announced the annexation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicily to that of Italy. The painting depicting the scene, "Entry of Garibaldi in Naples", is exhibited in the Museum of castel Nuovo. The Palace has a trapezoidal shape, with white marble facade punctuated by a portal flanked by Tuscan columns that support the balcony. The upper floor is punctuated by columns and Ionic pilasters framing three windows with marble frames. The courtyards are two: one hexagonal, the other rectangular, connected by a passage with times that creates a perspective as "optical telescope", typical technique of Vanvitelli. The interior is embellished with vanvitellian decorations, frescoes and paintings by Fedele Fischetti.
