Chiesa di Santa Maria della Mercede e Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori

Where Via San Sebastiano, Napoli

It is named after St. Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori (Doctor of the Church), who here laid at the feet of the Virgin his sword knight devoting himself to the priesthood. Established in the second half of the sixteenth century by a charity, the Church underwent a major renovation in 1706, by Ferdinando Sanfelice, which led to a complete redesign of the front, defined by using Doric elements for the part of the basement and, for the first level, a gable with obelisks, palm leaves and two large scrolls on the eardrum. In 1836 followed the restoration remembered by a plaque inside. The Church has a single nave covered by a vault in stucco, with hemispherical dome and windows. The main altar is work by Lorenzo Fontana, with putti by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro.
