Pirelli Palace, commonly called "Pirellone", was built to house the offices of the Pirelli tires. In 1978 the building was purchased by the Region of Lombardy, that made it their headquarters as a result of the restructuring of Bob Noorda. The skyscraper was built between 1956 and 1961 and designed by Gio Ponti, Giuseppe Valtolina, Pier Luigi Nervi, Antonio Fornaroli, Alberto Rosselli, Giuseppe Rinardi and Egidio Dell'Orto, according to the Italian Rationalist style: the entire structure is made reinforced concrete and with its 127 meters high (31 floors) is one of the tallest buildings in the world in this material. Before, it was accessed from Duca d'Aosta Square through the so-called "hill", a raised entry that contains within it an auditorium, today you enter from the back. In 2002, a small plane crashed into the building, severely damaging the structure and causing three casualties: since then, the 26th floor houses the "Place of Remembrance". After a complete restoration, Pirelli Palace was reopened in 2005. The top floor, open to the public on special occasions, offers a panoramic view of the city and is home to a multifunctional space.
