Convento e Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi all'Immacolata

Where Via Mons. d' Arrigo, 1, Messina

It is an imposing building, the second largest church in the city, whose mighty embattled apses are depicted in "The Mercy with three Angels" by Antonello da Messina (at Correr Museum, in Venice). First temple of the Franciscan order in Sicily, it was built in the Angevin period (1254). In 1884 it was devastated by a massive fire that destroyed the interior and the wooden roof, leaving only the outer walls standing. The reconstruction took place between 1926 and 1928 by engineer Letterio Savoy. As Royal Chapel, it housed the tombs of Frederick IV of Aragon, his mother Elisabeth of Carinthia and other members of the royal house.
