Piazza Aranci

Where Piazza Degli Aranci, 32, Massa (Massa-Carrara)

Aranci Square is the emblem of the city center. Built in 1807 and decorated by the double row of orange trees that still surrounds it on three sides, it emphasizes the enormous amount of the Ducal Palace, with which constitutes a unique monument. In 1827, Giacomo Leopardi wrote: "In Massa there is a square all surrounded by double rows of orange trees. These rows saw them married my mother in her youth, and now I look at them from the window of the hotel". During the work of repaving in 2012 were found the remains of the St. Peter's Church, demolished in 1807 by order of Elisa Baciocchi.
