Basilica di Sant'Andrea Apostolo

Where Piazza Andrea Mantegna, Mantova

Work by Leon Battista Alberti, it was completed many years after the architect's death, in ways not always comply with original projects. The facade is designed on the pattern of Roman triumphal arch framed by Corinthian pilasters that extend the full height of the facade, forming one of the first Renaissance monuments for which it was adopted the so-called "Giant Order". The interior has a Latin cross, with a single nave and side barrel chapels in rectangular base. The first chapel on the left houses the tomb of Andrea Mantegna and was decorated by Correggio based on the same Mantegna's designe, author also of "Baptism of Christ" and "Baptist's Holy Family", on the altar. Among the other works of art we will report a large altarpiece, Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saints by Lorenzo Costa il Vecchio and the frescoes in St. Longinus's Chapel by Giulio Romano. At the end of the sixteenth century it was built the Crypt with octagonal columns, intended to accommodate the relics of "Most Precious Blood" and burials of Gonzaga family.
