Salina

Where salina, Leni (Messina)

Part of the archipelago of Aeolian Islands, Salina is the second largest and by population after Lipari. In 1980 Salina Regional Park was established and in 1981 Le Montagne delle Felci and le Porri Nature Reserve. Finds at the village of Santa Marina show a significant settlement dating back to the fourth century BC. Around the seventh century AC Salina was one of the most populated Aeolian Islands. Arab invasions made it deserted until, around the seventeenth century, it returned to populate. Salina is the most fertile island of Aeolian Islands and is rich in water, where we grow fine grapes from which we obtain Malvasia delle Lipari, a wine with a sweet taste, and capers that are exported all over the world. On the beach of Pollara (fraction of Malfa) some scenes of the film Il postino (1994), the last film starring Massimo Troisi and some scenes of Caro Diario, by Nanni Moretti.
