The Civic Museum "Amedeo Lia" was established in 1995 and opened to the public the following year thanks to important donation of Amedeo Lia and his family to the city of La Spezia. The collection, housed in the seventeenth-century convent of San Francesco di Paola, includes about 1.200 works, from classical times until the eighteenth century, which attest the passion and the  vision of the collector. The exhibition areas are divided into thirteen rooms on two levels, with a path that starts from the spaces of the former church and the section of works of ancient and medieval art. In the wonderful paintings which occupies almost the entire first level and second level, in the collections of paintings stand out from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century, there are works by Pietro Lorenzetti, Lippo di Benivieni, Paolo di Giovanni Fei, Antonio Vivarini, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bellotto, Canaletto. Individual and homogeneous section is formed by a self-portrait of Pontormo and portraits by Titian, Gentile Bellini, Sebastiano del Piombo, Caravaggio, with Venetian art, Flemish and Italian. To quote again the precious Italian and foreign miniatures from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. Among the furnishings there are fine glasses, ceramics, bronzes, wooden items and rock crystal, ivory and jewelery from medieval religious art, enamels, expression of taste and culture of the time in Italy and in Europe. The museum is split up into specific routes in accessibility features and plays an intense activity of teaching in schools.
