Lavatoi pubblici dei Servi (o del Barabino)

Where Giardini Baltimora, 1, Genova

The Wash-houses, currently located in the Gardens Baltimore, were built in 1795 and are the only public original work built in Genoa during the Democratic Republic. The theme of the project was perhaps already contained in a plan developed years earlier by Giacomo Brusco, but the language used is from the architecture and decoration of Carlo Barabino, at that time newly appointed Member of Merit of the Academy Ligustica. Located in an area densely populated and popular, Via dei Servi, responded to a real need for public service. They keep two versions of the project: an elaborate more linear three lights and another one, similar to that developed, but with large pillars bugnati enriched with lion heads. The design was added a autobiographical note which appears indicative of the mood of the author: "The Wash-houses, made by me, Carlo Barabino, 4 n. 1797, had time models villains. Jobs that cost me the loss of peace of mind for the persecution made to me by Giuseppe Gnecco". The sinks were dismantled in the 70s, during the implementation of the General Plan of Via Mother of God, and reassembled at the walls of Sarzano by Ignazio Gardella, designer of the urban park.
