The Pitti Palace, begun by Luca Pitti in 1457 and designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, was in a secondary zone then the city, at the foot of the hill of Boboli, which placed it on a slightly higher level. In the eighteenth century, under the Lorena it was built two wings that surround the Square, slightly uphill, to emphasize even more the majesty of the complex. The Square was further enlarged in 1837, demolishing some buildings on either side. For much of the twentieth century, the Ssquare was used for the parking of vehicles; in 1996 the park was closed and they were made to the paving work to restore it to look as similar as possible to the original. Since 2011, the Square was entirely pedestrianized. In addition to Pitti Palace, stand: on the west side, Temple Leader Palace, inhabited by the English scholar who rebuilt the Vincigliata Castle, recognizable by its spacious rooftop loggia.
