The Istituto degli Innocenti in Florence has worked uninterruptedly for over six centuries, to help children and families. Founded at the beginning of the fifteenth century, it was the first secular institution dedicated to taking in children.

Today the Institute’s activities include establishing and testing educational and social services, studying the condition of children and promoting children’s rights and culture, in line with the UN Convention on the rights of the child. The commitment to protect children and their rights, updated as culture and society develop, has always been supported by donations from private citizens, associations and companies, confirming a widespread participation in the Institute’s mission.

The institute is located in the old hospital in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and enriched over time with works by famous artists.
Today this precious historical and monumental complex is the home of the Mudi, Museo degli Innocenti.

The Istituto degli Innocenti is a public corporation, a state-owned company providing services for the public, which acts according to its own articles of association through a Board of Directors appointed by the Province and Municipality of Florence.

 

The institute still maintains its original function of the host to children in need, child care services and manages research, study, documentation and training on the conditions of childhood. The Gallery is exposed to the artistic heritage of the organization. And 'under construction project of the new museum, which will expand the exhibition with new sezioni.Al museum is connected to the section of the recreational-educational workshop of the boys. The Section of sacred art will soon find space in the renovated rooms adjacent to the Choir of the current gallery.
