Piazza del Carmine

Where Piazza del Carmine, 9-19, Firenze

Piazza del Carmine in Florence is one of the main squares in the Oltrarno district. In 1330, it was formed to allow the people to attend the sermons of the Carmelites, who owned the front of the Church of St. Maria del Carmine, which still dominates the space with its unfinished facade, while to the south you can see the dome of the St. frediano's Church in Cestello. Across the road is the only important building, Rospigliosi Pallavicini Palace, home to a religious institute. Corner of Piattellina Square is a great tabernacle, fourteenth-century work attributed to the Master of St. Martin, depicting a Madonna with Child, Two Saints and two clients. At the corner of Via Santa Monica, a second tabernacle in sandstone houses a similar Marian fresco, but invoice later. A third tabernacle, with the Holy Family, is located at the corner of Borgo San Frediano. This area is one of the few of the old town where you can still breathe an authentic local atmosphere, yet not overwhelmed by the economic logic of mass tourism.
