Porta San Frediano

Where Borgo San Frediano, 303, Firenze

St.Frediano Gate is part of the ancient walls (1284-1333) of Florence and is in the neighborhood of Oltrarno, in the area further west that is named after the district of the same name. The Gate was built on the important Via Pisa, on a design attributed to Andrea Pisano. Based on its current size, the Gate had to be the most majestic of the walls, but remained unfinished in height, and then lowered and reinforced in the years before the siege of Florence. On the side facing the city, there is the coat of arms of Florence carved in stone. In this area the walls were not demolished, but there are openings practiced accessory to facilitate transit. The great wooden Door with bolt is original, as well as wrought iron rings to tie the horses, still present on the outer sides, along with support for the torches in wrought iron.
