Chiesa Immacolata Concezione

Where Via Concezione, 18, Diamante (Cosenza)

The construction of the Immaculate Conception's Church began in 1645, thanks to the prince Tiberio Carafa, religious and devoted to the Virgin Mary. The project was executed in Baroque style, contemplating the inclusion in the right side of the Chapel of the Souls of Purgatory, easy support for the elevation of the bell tower, "u Campanàru". At the end, the patrician families donated wooden statues of the seventeenth century (Crucifix, John the Evangelist and Our Lady of Sorrows), which were placed in the Chapel of the Souls of Purgatory. Prince Tiberio Carafa gave the monumental statue of the Immaculate Conception: about two meters high, carved into a tree olive trunk, it dates back to 1656. The Church suffered, over time, various renovations and was enlarged thanks to the citizens: among 1757 and 1787, the most important addition was the current apse; in 1875 the marble altar and the pulpit in 1881. A complete restoration occurred in 1928, under the artistic direction of the brothers Antonio and Praxedes Grimaldi, who also enriched the Church of two paintings: the "Protection of the Immaculate on her Diamante" and "Jesus with Children". During the last restoration (1985) were replaced perimeter marble walls and was restored the Chapel.
