Chiesa di San Nicola

Where Via Severino Marco Aurelio, 1, Cosenza

Located in the heart of Cosenza, among the modern churches of the city, is the most interesting for the works of art it contains. The old church was built in the middle of fields, including the St. Dominic, Carmine and the Reformation's convents, comw one of the first parishes in the city. In 1783 it suffered the collapse of the vault because of an earthquake; in 1943, various damage from the bombs of the Second World War. The seventeenth-century Church was demolished in 1961 and replaced as new St. Nicholas of Bari's Church (1956), re-designed in modern style by the architect Vittorio Morpurgo Ballio. Among the works inside: a bronze panel depicting twenty highlight scenes from the Christ's life, from the Annunciation to the Crucifixion, work by Tommaso Gismondi and the mosaic of the "Guardian Angel", by Emilio Greco (1992).
