Palazzo Ducale dei Castromediano

Where Via Sediolo, 4, Cavallino (Lecce)

Among the patrician residences of Salento stands the Limburg Castromediano, in Cavallino. The original nucleus of the marquis palace, which in time underwent many renovations and structural additions, such as to set it up as fortified structure, was built around the second half of the fifteenth century. The north entrance is fifteenth-century, while the facade, with embattled bastion, dates back to the sixteenth century, and so is the east side and another architectural body, with two orders, which overlooks the square. Entered the lobby of the "castle" (as it's known the residence by locals) we can admire the huge statue called "the Giant", which depicts Kiliano of Limburg, founder of the Castromediano family, in seventeenth-century clothes. The interior of the Palace shows signs of interventions over time: vast environments and decorated rooms, with clear prevalence of Baroque style (especially in the Gallery that Cosimo De Giorgi and other scholars, including the Garrisi, regarded as one of the most beautiful halls of patrician residences of the province of Lecce); floor made by cement mix and glazed polychrome tiles that form a pattern of stars; frescoes that decorate the vault with the symbols of the zodiac (reported by De Giorgi to Michelangelo style); Lecce stone statues on either side of the Gallery. Other rooms, such as the Weapons, mostly belonging to the Gorgoni (Castromediano's heirs), draw attention to the Baroque atmosphere: in the living room there are two valuable paintings, one of which by Oronzo Tiso; the Chapel, built by Don Giovanni Antonio Castromediano II in 1565, houses two altars dedicated to the Madonna di Leuca and the Virgin of Sorrows, in addition to paintings by Gianserio Strafella. In the Palace also has lived Sigismondo Castromediano, archaeologist, writer and patriot of the Salento Risorgimento.
