Chiesa di Sant'Agata al Borgo

Where Via Etnea, 441, Catania

The first Church was built in 1669, after the eruption of Etna. Demolished by the earthquake of 1693, it was rebuilt in 1709. The Church has rectangular plant with prospect in brick. On the right side, it stands a square bell tower with clock and four bells. The main entrance is surmounted by a bust of St. Agatha, while at the sides are two statues in lava stone representing the Saints Peter and Paul. The interior has a single nave with a vault frescoed by scenes representing St. Agatha and St. Euplio. The apse is entirely frescoed by Giovanni Lo Coco with scenes of the martyrdom of the Saint.
