Luogo - Historical building

Palazzo del Podestà (o della Regione)

Where Piazza Vecchia, Bergamo

The Palace is located in the "high city", enclosed within the Venetian walls, in Piazza Vecchia. It was built in the late twelfth century, when it was part of Bergamo in the first municipal reality of the Holy Roman Empire, as the seat of city politics until the Venetian invasion. Renamed "Palace of the Ragion", it housed assemblies towns. Following a fire, the building was renovated by Pietro Isabello, maintaining its prerogatives of political center to the mid-nineteenth century. Involved in a project of tourist revaluation, the Palace has returned to its former glory: the sloping roof retains part of the original battlements dovetail; has a ground floor porch, with a loggia with pointed arches and pillars decorated with Romanesque zoomorphic capitals. The interior of the porch retains the relief of the "Madonna with Child in her arms" by Bartolomeo Manni. On the floor it can see a sundial of the eighteenth century. On the first floor is the "Hall of Trusses", with paintings and frescoes by Bramante. The Palace is home to the Section "Veneta Age" of the Historical Museum of Bergamo.
